| Is the Davis program covered by
insurance? |
|
In the United States,
most health insurance companies unfortunately do not cover
treatment for learning disabilities, but policies vary so
widely it is always worth checking your policy. In addition
to looking for coverage for treatment for learning
disabilities, it is also worthwhile to look for coverage for
occupational therapy or counseling.
Many families have been able to arrange
coverage via an employee's "cafeteria" plan. Under such
plans, some employers offer employees the option to select a
benefit other than regular health insurance to reimburse the
sort of medical expenses not usually covered by insurance,
such as out of pocket expenses and deductibles. This is a
good option when the family already has regular health
insurance through the employee's spouse.
The money for the reimbursement account is
designated at the beginning of each tax year. The employee
then files a claim as expenses arise that are not covered by
insurance; reimbursement may be determined by IRS
guidelines.
Under the IRS regulations, the Davis
Dyslexia Correction program qualifies as a remedial reading
program and can be reimbursed. It may be necessary to get a
doctor's recommendation first to qualify.
| Is the cost of the Davis
Program tax deductible? |
|
In the US, the
Davis Dyslexia Correction program MAY be deductible
as a medical expense if there is a doctor's
recommendation and the fee combined with other
medical expenses totals more than 7% of adjusted
gross income.
It is a very good idea to have the
doctor's recommendation dated and in writing before
filing taxes because unusual medical deductions may
be noticed and questioned by the IRS.
In 2005, the IRS states the
following under the topic "SPECIAL EDUCATION" in
Publication 502 (Medical and Dental Expenses):
You can include in medical
expenses fees you pay on a doctor's
recommendation for a child's tutoring by a
teacher who is specially trained and qualified
to work with children who have learning
disabilities caused by mental or physical
impairments, including nervous system disorders.

NOTE: Because tax laws are
subject to change, it is always a good idea to check
regulations for the current tax year. The
