About Our Course

The Arizona Dyslexia Correction Center's course is based on the Davis Dyslexia Correction® program of 30 hours of one-on-one counseling. All training is done personally by John Mertz, a licensed Davis Facilitator since 1998. All sessions are personal, one student at a time.

Step 1 - Is this course right for you?

Many parents recognize the gift of dyslexia in their children or others they love.  Or you may be considering the program for yourself, after years of struggling with dyslexia as a child and now an adult.  The Davis Dyslexia Correction program is suitable for:

  • children age 8 and over

  • adults of any age

Before we begin any course, I perform a free Perceptual Ability Assessment with the student. This interview will determine if the student does indeed have the "gift" of dyslexia and if the Davis Dyslexia Method is a match for your specific needs.

There is no cost for this assessment.

A preliminary evaluation can be done over the phone.

I will only continue with the program if I am confident you will be successful!

Step 2 - Choosing a convenient time and location

Now that you have decided to continue with the program, I will make every effort to be flexible so we can choose a time and location that is most convenient for you and your family.

The course consists of 30 hours of counseling that can be scheduled:

  • over two consecutive weekends or

  • during one full week (six hours a day for five days)

Depending on your circumstances, you can come to my location, or I will travel to yours.

Step 3 - What to expect during the week

First, I will work with the student (and the parents if the student is a young child) to develop a profile of academic weaknesses which need to be remedied. For example, the student may want to focus on problems associated with spelling, handwriting, math, or attention deficits, in addition to or instead of reading difficulties.

During the week the student will be given Davis Orientation Counseling® to overcome visual perception problems. Orientation Counseling works very quickly, so most students will experience improvement on the very first day.

I will also work with the student to master the alphabet and other difficult symbols through clay modeling.  This helps children to learn to distinguish among confusing letters and numbers (such as b/d, p/q, etc.). It also uncovers 'trigger' letters that lead to confusion and misperceptions for adults.

If the student has difficulty reading, I will use an approach called Spell-Reading, which will help train you to track, sequence, and process letters in the right order when you read.

You will be taught how to use Davis Symbol Mastery® to master understanding of words. Each student will usually make several words, beginning with the first few words of a list of 'trigger' words. This helps develop understanding and sight recognition of the small words frequently used in language.

When working with children and teenagers, I instruct parents in using the basic methods taught, so that you can continue to work with your child at home. I will also provide support training to family members or tutors who may accompany you to the program.

At the end of the basic program, students have a full understanding of all the Davis methods, and know how to continue to use these methods on their own.

On completion, students are given a kit containing the tools for Symbol Mastery, which they will continue to use until they have mastered all the trigger words which cause problems for dyslexic people.

Step 4 - After the course

I want to be sure the student continues to use the techniques learned during the class.  I will follow up with you and schedule 3 follow up review sessions.

"I tried everything…not knowing I had dyslexia I thought I was just slow….(My mother) picked up the book “The Gift of Dyslexia”, read it, and realized that that was me.  I was hesitant because I tried everything else and nothing seemed to be working.  After seeing that only people with dyslexia could (see in 3D) I thought to myself, “wow, this is a gift”. So I signed up for the program..… Coming from someone that has dyslexia and that has done the program I can seriously say that it works with amazing success.
